Bio

We are Cuatro Piraguas, a quartet (also performing as a duo) based in Leipzig, Germany. We’re made up of musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds, united by a shared passion for the musical traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Our name refers to the piraguas — traditional boats found throughout these regions — as a symbol of encounter, journey and connection, navigating with the current and allowing themselves to be carried by it. In our imagination, each of us is a piragua, carried by the currents of our own experiences, roots and influences. These different paths converge in a shared musical journey where we meet, drift and create together.

The music we play flows between Afro-Peruvian rhythms, the folklore of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, and the diverse musical traditions of Venezuela. Drawing on these roots, we combine traditional rhythms with original compositions, bringing forms and motifs passed down through generations into dialogue with contemporary influences. The result is a distinctive and multifaceted sound in which past and present meet, transform and are reimagined.

Through our interpretations and compositions, we explore themes with deep emotional and social resonance, including feminist perspectives and social justice. At the same time, our songs celebrate the beauty of everyday life and nature, inviting us to slow down and notice what often goes unseen amid the fast pace of life.

"En Vela", our debut album, is composed largely of original material and is the result of a year of continuous artistic work and creation. Driven by a strong personal desire to keep exploring, developing and finding new stories to tell, the album reflects our ongoing search for a sound that is truly our own.
